About the Tufted Titmouse

The Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus Bicolor) is a small songbird from North America, a species in the tit and chickadee family (Paridae). They are a very vocal species that frequently send uttering calls and sing during the spring and summer. This songbird is mostly recognized for its gray, crested head, rust-colored flanks, black forehead, and large eyes.

Tufted Titmouse Color Pattern

Its back is filled with soft silvery gray plumage while its underbelly is white with a rusty peach-colored pattern. The Tufted Titmouse has a distinctive black patch above its bill which makes it look snub-nosed.

Their heir large head and eye, thick neck, and full bodies make the Tufted Titmouse birds appear as large birds.

Tufted Titmouse Behavior

  • These birds are acrobatic hunters that are very methodical and slow in how they forage.
  • They are regular visitors at bird feeders and flock together with nuthatches, chickadees, and woodpeckers.
  • Tufted Titmouse birds produce a loud “peta-peta-peta” whistled songs that fill the spring air.

What Tufted Titmouse Eat

Their diet is mostly insects like caterpillars, beetles, true bugs and seeds, nuts, and small fruits. They also sometimes eat spiders and snails.

Where the Tufted Titmouse Live

The Tufted Titmouse is found in most Eastern woodlands and indigenous evergreen forests. They are also domestic birds commonly found at bird feeders in parks, backyards, and orchards.

It needs a habitat with dense canopies and large trees for it to build its nests in.

Range and Migration

Tufted Titmouse Lifecycle

Female Tufted Titmouse birds lay 5-6 smooth white speckled eggs at a one egg per day rate. She incubates the eggs for 12 to 14 days and the male Titmouse feeds his partner as she does so. After a few days the eggs hatch and the female broods over her chicks while the male bird feeds all of them.

At the edge of 15-16 days, the chicks are ready to fledge and fly out of the nest.
